Lot Description
[EARLY PHOTOGRAPHY] -- [INDONESIA]. Album containing photographs of Java [Dutch East Indies]. Ca 1860s.
Oblong quarto (11 x 13 1/2 in.) 280 x 340 mm. 92 albumen photographs, 8 x 10 1/2 in., or smaller, mounted recto on 10 1/2 x 13 in. album pages (toning to prints, otherwise very good condition, toning and light corner/edge wear to album pages). Quarter morocco gilt (moderate scuffing and wear to extremities). Manuscript title on mount below most photographs.
The album is comprised of picturesque views of Java, Batavia, Buitenzorg, and other locations, including landscape scenes and images of vegetation and the botanical gardens. Views of native homes, plantations, villages, urban scenes, temples, and ruins are also enclosed, as well as portraits of native subjects including actors, princesses, dancers, concubines, warriors, and weavers (some measuring 4 x 5 1/4 in.). Other images of note include a view of a puppet or shadow play in Java and the execution of rebels at Batavia.
