[CIVIL WAR]. Quarter plate tintype of Private Butterfield, Company I, 14th Illinois Cavalry, posed with his sword.

Quarter plate tintype. (Image a bit dark, otherwise very fine condition.) Housed in full pressed paper case (reinforced at hinge). A full-standing view of a young private with a sword hanging at his side. He wears a kepi with crossed saber insignia, the number "14," and "I" visible on top. The case interior includes the penciled notations, "Butterfield / 14th Ill / Co. I," suggesting that the subject's last name may be "Butterfield."

Research indicates that two soldiers by the name of "Butterfield" served in Company I, 14th Illinois Cavalry, including Elihu Butterfield, who was reported missing at Macon, GA, in July 1864, and William Butterfield, who was discharged in July 1863. The 14th Illinois was engaged at Nashville, Franklin, and Knoxville, as well as the Atlanta Campaign.
