2 1/2 x 3 3/4 in. tintype with "Robt. Russell 12th N.Y. Cavl. Newburn, NC" scratched on verso. (Some creasing to plate, light surface wear, few scratches and some nicking to plate.) Robert Russell served with Co. B, 12th New York Cavalry, and was wounded seriously at Plymouth, NC, 4/17/1864. He was shot in his right belly on his horse at Plymouth but stayed on it to avoid capture. The bullet passed through his body and exited the right side of his lower back about 3 in. from his backbone, hitting his pelvis but missing the vital organs. He returned to his unit and recovered. Russell also served in Companies C and F.
