The 79th New York, also known as the Highland Guard, was a regiment in the New York Militia organized in 1858 and was mobilized when war erupted in 1861. Throughout the war, the regiment saw action in nearly every major battle of the Eastern Theater, including but not limited to: First Bull Run, the Port Royal Expedition, Second Bull Run, Antietam, Fredericksburg, the Siege of Knoxville, the Wilderness, Spotsylvania Court House, Cold Harbor, and the Siege of Petersburg. The graves seen here comprise soldiers fallen in the Knoxville campaign in the largely Unionist region of East Tennessee.
