Lot Description
[CIVIL WAR]. Sixth plate ambrotype of a Confederate private from the Army of Northern Virginia.
Sixth plate ambrotype. (Darkening at perimeter, light surface scratches, some mottling.) Housed in full leather case (split at hinge, light scuffs).
A portrait of a Confederate private wearing what appears to be a 2nd Pattern Richmond depot jacket, including a medium high square collar, cloth epaulettes, and nine buttons down the front (with no buttons on the cuffs). The uniform is adorned with what appears to be a thin line of "V" shaped braid on the left cuff with a single line of narrow braid around the center of the collar, both acceptable custom modifications/additions. Published works concur that the 2nd Pattern Richmond depot jacket "was probably issued as early as the spring of 1862 until at least mid 1864," thus dating this image to ca 1862 or after.
