Lot Description
[CIVIL WAR]. 4-page letter from Mary Anna Morrison Jackson, second wife and widow of General Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson, regarding a copy of the Morrison coat of arms. Charlotte, NC. 30 October 1912.
4 pages, 5 x 6 7/16 in., creasing, with light separation at creases and toning to edges. With envelope addressed to Mr. Gaillard S. Tennent of Asheville, NC..
Mrs. Morrison Jackson writes to an artist about his rendering of the Morrison coat of arms, asking for specific changes to be made to the depiction of Moors in the design. The letter contains sensitive content including racist language. Further details available upon request.
Mrs. Morrison Jackson became Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson's second wife in 1857. Being the widow of a famous general won her great affection throughout the southern states, and after the death of Varina Davis in 1906, she was even lauded the "First Lady of the South." The letter featured here shows the deep prejudices held by a romanticized figure long after the war and Reconstruction period were over.
