Lot Description
[CIVIL WAR]. Pieces of coverlet taken from Stonewall Jackson's house during the Civil War by Colonel E.W. Penny, 130th Indiana Infantry.
11 3/4 x 12 in. and 2 1/2 x 1 3/4 in. fragments of a blue and white coverlet (frayed and trimmed edges, few areas of separation). Pinned to the larger fragment of the coverlet is an inscribed period note that reads, "This Piece of coverlit [sic] belonged to Col. E.W. Penny / Taken out of Stonewall Jackson's house after the U.S. Civil War ending in 1865," as well as the printed label, "Return in Five Days to E.W. Penny, 1142 High Street, Topeka, Kansas."
The accompanying label indicates that the coverlet fragments were previously owned by Elijah W. Penny of Kokomo, Indiana, who enlisted as a captain and was commissioned into Company A, 130th Indiana Infantry, on 2/3/1864. He was WIA 8/6/1864 at Atlanta, GA, suffering a severe wound in his right arm, which had to be amputated. He was promoted to major 9/1/1864, then lieutenant colonel on 4/1/1865, before mustering out on 12/2/1865 at Charlotte, North Carolina. Penny later moved to Goodland, Kansas, and died in Topeka in 1919.
