Lot Description

[CIVIL WAR]. A group of 6 CDVs of Civil War personalities, incl. Jefferson Davis, Ulysses S. Grant, and soldier tentatively identified as Corvette E. Lewis, 32nd Massachusetts Infantry, WIA Laurel Hill, VA.

Jefferson Davis. New York: Brady, Anthony, n.d. (toning, soiling to print and mount; corner and edge wear to mount). -- Ulysses S. Grant, wearing mourning band for Lincoln. Philadelphia: F. Gutekunst, n.d., ca 1865. 2-cent revenue stamp to verso (occasional spotting; mount and print trimmed). -- CDV of a mustached captain (after lithograph/engraving). Washington, DC: R.W. Addis, n.d. (some spotting; light edge and corner wear to mount). -- CDV of a bearded officer, period inked notation or signature to verso, which is difficult to discern but appears to read, "F.J. Hurlburt." Chicago: Wallis Brothers, n.d. (soiling, residue to print and mount, fading to print, print partially separated from mount; mount trimmed). -- CDV, period copy image after hard image of an armed private standing against a painted studio backdrop. Northampton, MA: D. Murless, n.d. (spotting, some soiling, residue near lower right corner).

[With:] CDV of a young private seated in a studio with cap in hand, insignia visible on top. He appears to wear insignia of the V Corps on his vest. Faint penciled notation to verso tentatively identifies the subject as "Corvette Lewis." Northampton, MA: J.D. Wells, n.d. (spotting, some surface soiling to image and mount; corner and edge wear to mount). Corvette E. Lewis was a 20 year-old basket maker in Huntington, MA, when he enlisted as a private on 5/29/1862 and mustered into Co. G, 32nd Massachusetts Infantry. He re-enlisted on 1/1/1864; WIA at Laurel Hill, VA, 5/12/1864; and died of wounds on 5/20/1864.

Together, 6 CDVs, approx. 2 1/4 x 3 5/8 in., or smaller, on cardstock mounts.
