Lot Description
[POLITICS IN AMERICA]. Rooster insignia. Ca late 19th century.
Approx. 1 3/4 x 1 1/16 in. stamped metal rooster insignia (excavated condition, varied patination, most details remain raised/visible).
It has been suggested that this piece could be from Grover Cleveland's 1892 Presidential campaign, as other known badges and medallions identified to that campaign feature this emblem, employed by the Democratic Party at that time, prior to the donkey.
It has also been suggested that this piece could relate to the 7th Ohio Infantry Regiment, nicknamed "The Roosters." How the regiment received the designation is not entirely clear, but it is reported that their commander Colonel Creighton would crow like a rooster before battle. The 7th Ohio saw heavy action, participating at Second Bull Run, Antietam, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Chattanooga, and the Atlanta Campaign.
