[CIVIL WAR]. A group of 2 Trans-Mississippi Issued Confederate bonds.
2 Confederate bonds issued in Texas and Louisiana after Union forces controlled the Mississippi River and effectively cut the Confederacy in two.
Includes:
Original $500 coupon bond issued by the Treasury Department of the Confederate States of America, in Richmond, 2 March 1863. 13 3/4 x 14 3/4 in. (fold lines, some chipping, short tears to edges). Vignette of a Confederate soldier warming his hands over a fire. Includes 7 unredeemed coupons. Example of a Trans-Mississippi issue with endorsement "issued at Houston Texas" and signature of CSA Treasury agent.
[With:] Original $1000 coupon bond issued by the Treasury Department of the Confederate States of America, in Richmond, 2 March 1863. 14 x 14 in. (fold lines, occasional spotting, some chipping, short tears to edges). Fine portrait of Lt. General Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson. Includes 7 unredeemed coupons. Example of a Trans-Mississippi issue with notation on face: “This Bond Not To be Valid Unless Indorsed by the Depositary Who Issues It.” With endorsement in ink on verso "Endorsed at Shreveport May 25/64, and signature of CSA Treasury agent.
Together, 2 fine examples of Trans-Mississippi bonds. (Criswell #121 and #122, “Confederate & Southern States Bonds” by Grover Criswell).
