Lot Description
[CIVIL WAR]. The Chicora Importing & Exporting Company of South Carolina. Confederate blockade runner bond. Charleston, SC, 9 June 1863.

1 page, 5 x 8 1/4 in., partly printed certificate on blue laid paper, darkening to upper left.

A certificate, completed in manuscript, good for one share of capital stock in the Chicora Importing and Exporting Company of South Carolina. The Company was incorporated in December 1863 but had already begun operations by September 1862. The company was quite successful and they were able to repay their stockholders with heavily inflated Confederate treasury notes and bonds. By the close of the war, the company had shipped approximately 10,000 bales of Confederate cotton through the blockade and returned with both necessities and luxuries from abroad.
