Lot Description
[CIVIL WAR -- ZOUAVES]. Presentation silver flag staff collar with inscription to the Ellsworth Zouaves from the Chicago Merchants. 27 July 1868.
Length 3 in. Diam. approx 1 1/2 in. metal collar from a staff or pike (some surface scratches, tarnish). Engraved: "Presented to the Ellsworth Zouaves In the Chicago Merchants through Geo. J. Colby a member July 27, 1868."
An article titled "Presentation to the Bold Zouaves" published on 29 July 1868 in the Chicago Evening Post reported on the event: "The Ellsworth Zouaves, the pet 'milling-tary' of the city, met at their armory...and after dress parade and inspection were presented with a splendid stand of colors by the merchants of the city, through Mr. Geo. J. Colby, one of the members." The article continues with a description of the item here: "The other is a national flag, with a portrait of Col. Ellsworth in the blue union. The ferule of the staff is of silver, and inscribed, 'Presented to the Ellsworth Zouaves by the Chicago Merchants, through George J. Colby, a member, July 27, 1868."
