Lot Description
[CIVIL WAR]. A pair of documents related to the service of Private Thomas Williams, WIA, Company E, 15th Regiment, United States Colored Troops including discharge and payment papers.
Partly-printed discharge paper for Thomas Williams. Nashville, TN, 17 July 1865. 1 page, creasing, short separations to creases, few pinholes to upper left. In part: "...having served Honestly and Faithfully with his Company to the present date, is now entitled to a Discharge by reason of Surgeon's Certificate of Disability." Red ink to right margin adds, "Amputation of Right leg for injuries received at te battle of Nashville Dec 15 1864." -- Partly printed receipt documenting payment in the amount of $75.39 received by Thomas Williams. 10 July 1865. 1 page, creasing, some separation to creases, chipping to edges. Williams's mark at bottom.
Thomas Williams enlisted as a private in Nashville, TN on or around 21 December 1863, and mustered into Company E of the 17th Regiment, United States Colored Troops upon enlistment. He received a severe wound to his right leg, which was amputated, at the Battle of Nashville, 15 December 1864.
