[CIVIL WAR]. A group of 9 documents related to the 7th US Colored Troops including muster rolls and appointments for 2nd Lieutenant Joseph M. Califf. 

Attorney appointment, signed (his mark) by Vincent Demby, Company C, 7th USCT, 6 June 1865. 8 1/2 x 11 1/2 in. partly-printed document (creased at folds with some separation, clipping). Docketed verso, with attached receipt for $50 bounty due to Demby. Power of attorney describes Demby as an "enlisted slaw colored man." -- Muster-in roll for Joseph M. Califf, 7th USCT, signed by Colonel William Birney, Baltimore, MD, 8 October 1863. 17 x 11 in. partly-printed document (creased at folds, with some separation and adhesive repair to creases, chipping to edges and corners, toning). Docketed verso. Califf is mustered into Company F as a 2nd lieutenant.  -- Muster-out roll for Joseph M. Califf, 7th USCT, signed by Fred A. Kendall, Chapin's Farm, VA, 11 March 1865. 23 1/4 x 10 1/2 in. partly-printed document (creased at folds, with significant separation and adhesive repair to creases, chipping to edges and corners, toning). Califf is mustered out for promotion, to take effect 4 March 1865. -- Muster-in roll for Joseph M. Califf, 7th USCT, signed by Captain Fred A. Kendall, Chapin's Farm, VA, 11 March 1865. 17 x 11 in. partly-printed document (creased at folds, with some separation to creases, chipping to edges and corners, spotting). Docketed verso. Joseph M. Califf is promoted from 2nd lieutenant to 1st lieutenant in the same regiment, to take effect 5 March 1865. -- Muster roll for a detachment of the 7th Regiment, United States Colored Troops, signed by Major Abijah S. PELL ("A.S. Pell") as Inspector and Mustering Officer, Ringgold Barracks, TX, 31 August 1865. 30 3/4 x 10 1/2 in. partly-printed document (creased and discolored at folds). Docketed verso. Document lists 10 privates along with their payment information. One private by the name of George Washington is listed as a deserter from City Point, VA. -- And 4 other documents including 2 more  appointments for Joseph M. Califf. -- Together 9 documents related to the 7th Regiment United States Colored Troops.

Joseph M. Califf enlisted on 15 September 1865 as a 2nd lieutenant, and commissioned into Company F, 7th USCT that November. He was promoted to 1st lieutenant in March of 1865, and breveted a captain only days later. He mustered out in October of 1866, and thereafter served in the US Army.

Vincent Demby enlisted as a private on 26 September 1863, and mustered into Company C, 7th USCT that November. He was discharged for disability on 16 January 1866.
