Lot Description
[CIVIL RIGHTS]. Second Giant March Up Market Street. [San Francisco, CA], [1964].
7 x 10 1/4 in. broadside (some fading to print, condition generally good).
On July 12, 1964, the day before the opening of the Republican National Convention in San Francisco, 35,000 people marched up Market Street calling for civil rights and protesting Senator Barry Goldwater as the potential Republican presidential nominee. This march, often referred to as the "Human Rights March," was the second major protest march in the city, the first having occurred in 1963 following the bombing of a church in Birmingham, Alabama, which killed four young Black girls. The "Second Giant March Up Market Street" was called for by the Church-Labor Conference, composed of the Baptist Ministers Union, the Interdenominational Ministerial Alliance, and Negro Labor Assembly. Among the reasons for the march identified on the broadside were "to vigoursly present to the delegates the demand for the full equality of 20 million Negro American citizens," to reject "presidential candidate Barry Goldwater and the racist platform he represents," and to demonstrate "solidarity with our embattled people in the south."
