Lot Description
[CIVIL RIGHTS]. The peace and freedom party needs 500 volunteers to work full time on the registration drive over Christmas vacation. Berkeley, CA: Berkeley Litho Service, 1968.
8 1/2 x 14 in. letterpress broadside (chipping and discoloration to right edge, creased at horizontal fold with additional light creasing). Centrally featured is an illustrated portrait of Santa Claus pointing toward the viewer, a visual reference to Uncle Sam. Bold text above and below reads, "Peace & Freedom / I want you / the peace and freedom party needs 500 volunteers to work full time on the registration drive over Christmas Vacation. Sign up at the table to work in Berkeley, San Francisco, Los Angeles, San Diego, etc. Or contact the CNP office 2214 Grove 549-0690."
Verso features an appeal to readers to register as a member of the Peace and Freedom Party, outlining the "grim picture of American society" and the party's outlook and stances on current political policies and issues, including, "full equality now for black Americans and all other oppressed minority groups...the institution of economic programs to break down the ghettos of poverty and create jobs and a decent living standard for all Americans."
[With:] 11 x 8 1/2 in. letterpress broadside announcing a series of Berkeley Community Meetings put on by the Peace and Freedom Party Organizing Committee of the CNP (heavy chipping including significant tears and loss to edges, discoloration and spots of soiling throughout). Lime green background block letters spell out "Peace & Freedom" over which black text announces dates for the community meetings "to discuss a Peace & Freedom Program for America in 1968." The topic for the November 26th meeting is listed as "Proposals on Foreign Policy."
