Lot Description
[SLAVERY & ABOLITION]. Manuscript bill of sale for enslaved men Abram, Solomon, and Rufus. Carroll Parish, LA, 18 February 1861.
3 pages, folio, 8 1/2 x 14 in., on blue paper, minor toning, old creases. Undersigned. Docketed to verso.
The document records the purchase of a 470-acre tract of land noting "also there I have viz "Abram" aged 35 years, "Solomon" aged 28 year and "Rufus" aged 23 years all of which will more fully appear by reference to the deed of Record in the Recorder's Office." This was sold to Henry Ledbetter from Walter Anderson, both of Carroll Parish, LA, however, Ledbetter was unable to fulfill the obligations of the first bill of sale. An arbitrator arranged for the sale to be rescinded and this document transferred ownership of the property and the men back to Anderson.
