Lot Description
[SLAVERY & ABOLITION]. Collection of manuscript poems, including "Song of the fugitive slave." N.p., ca 1860.

20 pages, 8vo, 6 1/2 x 8 in., lacking pages, toned, occasional brown staining, small marginal chips. 

A booklet of hand-written poetry, most written in 4-line stanzas. Appears to be lacking earlier pages as first leaf present concludes with stanzas numbered 11 and 12.

Notable in the collection is a poem titled "Song of the fugitive slave", a variation of "Song of the Free" a song of the Underground Railroad set to the tune of "Oh! Susanna." Consisting of 8 stanzas of 8 and 4 lines each, it tells the tale of a self-emancipated formerly enslaved man from Tennessee seeking freedom in Canada via the Underground Railroad.
