MARR, John (1788-1848). Autograph letter signed (“Q. Marr”). Park Gate, [VA], 30 December 1827. 1 page, 4to, 7 5/8 x 9 3/4 in., old creases, small loss to lower right, toned.
Writes to offer to rent out the blacksmith: "I have the blacksmith for hire of great experience and some reputation. I cannot say he is a first rate workman. If you can hire him for $90 he is willing to go so far from his wife, or can get her established near him. He belongs to my sister Fannie and not me." Written by the father of John Quincy Marr (1825-1861), the first Confederate soldier killed by a Union soldier, at the Battle of Fairfax Court House, VA on 1 June 1861.
[With:] BADGER, George Badger (1795-1866). Autograph letter signed (“Geo. E. Badger”). Raleigh, [NC], 27 May 1858. 3 pages, 8vo, 6 1/8 x 8 in., old creases, minor toning.
Discussion of a visiting minister: “George [the minister] preaches three times on Sunday in Dr. Smeles’ Chapel, and then at night to the blacks at the Methodist Church. Our congregation is most pleased with his sermons also his black audience was delighted and greatly stirred…some of the sisters expressing that they wish they could have him always.” Badger was an influential Whig supporter in the 1830s and was appointed Secretary of the Navy by William Henry Harrison. He resigned to continue private practice, however, after Tyler assumed the presidency.
