Genealogical records identify Enoch Titcomb (1752-1814) as a judge in Newburyport, Essex, Massachusetts. He also served as a brigade major in the Massachusetts militia and later as the town treasurer. Silhouettes of this style are more typical of the 1820s and 1830s, however, suggesting that this is a portrait of Enoch Titcomb, Jr. (1812-1887), a clockmaker born in Newburyport and active in Boston by 1835.
