[EARLY PHOTOGRAPHY]. Extensive collection of international CDVs, many featuring royalty.
A vast collection of over 750 mostly European CDVs featuring subjects such as royal family members, artists, philosophers, and other notables, along with views of European cities and structures, many engraved. A few from-life subjects include English Prime Minister Robert Peel (Disderi, Paris), Victor Hugo (E. & H.T. Anthony, New York), hans Christen Anderson (George E. Hansen, Copenhagen), Alexandre Dumas (Silsee, Case & Co., Boston), women's rights activist Emily Faithfull (Sarony, New York), French artist Rosa Bonheur (Case & Getchell, Boston), statesman Jules Claude Gabriel Favre (Bayard & Bertall, Paris), a view of the Prince of Wales and Shah of Persia riding in a royal carriage (W. & D. Downey, London), King Leopold II of Belgium (W. & D. Downey, London), John Stuart Mill (Fay, New York), Egyptian Khedive Isma'il Pasha (Fay, New York), Queen Victoria and family (Jabez Hughes, Isle of Wight), George V of Wales (Hills & Saunders, London), Margaret of Savoy (H. Le Lieure, Rome), and many, many more. -- Together, 750+ CDVs, each approx. 2 1/8 x 3 1/ 4 in., or larger, on cardstock mounts, many identified with period or later inscriptions on verso. Most housed loosely in 3 cardboard boxes, while 30 featuring French royalty are housed together in a CDV album. Conditions vary, though most are fair, with some toning and soiling.
