Lot Description
FILLMORE, Millard (1800-1874). Document signed as Pres. of the Washington Natl. Monument Society.
Document twice signed ("Millard Fillmore"), as President of the Washington National Monument Society. Washington, D.C., 1850.
The Officers and Board Managers of the Washington National Monument Society. Washington, D.C., 1 August 1850. 4to, 8 1/4 x 10 1/2 in. partly printed document (toned, short separations along old folds).
The document is signed by the officers and managers of the Washington National Monument Society, notably by United States President and Ex Officio President Millard FILLMORE, Mayor of Washington and Second Vice President of the Society Walter LENOX (1817-1874), and noted politician and Army General Winfield Scott. Fillmore additionally signed the verso of the document.
The Washington National Monument Society was originally formed in 1833 upon the approach of George Washington's 100th birthday. It raised money and held design competitions for the eventual monument. Letterhead features an engraving of the proposed monument which would not be finished until 1854.
