A scarce pro-Pierce, anti-Scott 1852 campaign pamphlet titled "The Political Letters and Writings of General Scott, Reviewed, Discussed, and Compared." N.p., [1852]. 24pp, 6 x 8 3/4 in. (removed from bound volume, toned). Above title "A Document for All Thinking Men!". -- "Proceedings and Speeches at the Whig Ratification Meeting held in Washington City on Monday evening, June 28, 1852. Washington: Gideon and Co., 1852. 16pp, 5 1/2 x 8 1/2 in (dampstains, toning, removed from bound volume). -- "The Dangers of electing an Incompetent Man President. The Galphin Case! Facts for the People of All Parties." N.p., [1852]. 8pp, 6 x 8 1/2 in. (toning, light soil, removed from bound volume). -- "General Scott's Correspondence with Hon. W.L. Marcy, Secretary of War Under President Polk." N.p., n.d., 16pp, 5 3/4 x 8 3/4 in. (inkblot, toning, removed from bound volume).

Published by Charles Magnus of New York ca 1853. 9 x 11 in. (toning especially along edge lines, left corner slightly clipped, colors bright). -- Engraving of Major General Winfield Scott by P.M. Whelpley, from a daguerreotype, for the "American Whig Review," printed by A.H. Dunnett, ca 1852. Approx. 8 x 10 1/2 in. (scattered spotting, toning, light soil). -- "Portrait of Gen. Frank Pierce, President of the United States" from Gleason's Pictorial Drawing-Room Companion. 10 1/4 x 14 3/4 in. (slight creasing).

[With:] Rare broadside and cabinet card. BUTLER, Benjamin (1818-1893). W.E. Robinson, to the Citizens of Lowell. Lowell, MA: N.p., 1851. 9 1/4 x 13 3/8 in. letterpress broadside. An account of a speech that "Mr. B.F. Butler made...taunting the Whigs because they did not hold a public meeting to discuss the questions at issue in the coming contest." RARE: No other copies listed. -- Portrait of Benjamin Butler. Suncook, NH: Archambault, n.d. 4 1/8 x 5 1/2 in. albumen cabinet card on cardstock mount (minor toning). -- Together, 2 items.

Benjamin Butler (1818-1893) was a major general in the Union Army during the Civil War and an active politician. In 1851, he was a Democrat. At the outbreak of the Civil War, he became a Republican, before aligning with the Greenback Party in 1874, before rejoining the Democratic Party in 1889 until his death.
