Lot Description
[HUNTING]. A group of 18th-early 19th-century hunting bags and powder horns.
A group of 4 comprising:
6 x 7 in. “brain tanned” hunting bag with V-shaped flap, sides of the bag stitched with leather. 24 in. cream and blue stripe woven fabric shoulder strap (heavy wear to bag and strap, and repaired in spots), attached is a 12 in. powder horn with a carved large protruding wooden plug, period iron staple holds the strap. The woven strap is similar to those used on Rev. War cartridge boxes and canteen slings, a crude early example.
8 x 7 1/4 in. tanned leather hunting bag with large front flap and wide leather shoulder strap measuring approx. 32 in., 8 in. attached carved horn (condition generally good for all elements). Ca War of 1812 period through Seminole Wars.
6 x 7 in. leather hunting bag with hair still on leather, 26 in. shoulder strap, 2 in. attached carved powder horn measure (appears to be modern thread), 8 in. attached powder horn with large bulbous wooden plug (wear and small losses to bag, condition generally good).
6 x 7 in. ca 18th-century hunting bag ensemble, with crude cut flap (heavy wear to bag, detached portion of leather, flap attached but nearly separated), comes with a steel bullet mold, and a powder measure which dates later than the bag and other items.
Ensembles with some degree of repair, replacement, and/or modification to keep them in service as long as possible, some may be modern repairs. More detailed condition report available upon request.
