Lot Description
[AMERICANA]. A group of lighting implements and a footstool. Ca 18th - early 19th century.
The lot contains 8 items, including:
5 1/2 x 12 in. single candle lantern made of pierced tin, Paul Revere style. Ca late 18th-early 19th century (some oxidation to tin, handling ring still attached).
[With:] 5 x 10 in., four-sided wooden-frame candle lantern with early hinged style door. Complete with four glass panes, original iron hanger, flat head nail used as a pull and latch. A similar example is listed in Antique Country Furnishings by Neumann, page 78, figure 314. Known as the “bowet” style. Ca late 18th-early 19th century.
[With:] 11 1/2 in. ht. Ipswich grease lamp. A hinged Betty lamp sitting atop a tinned-iron columnar stand with hanging hook. See Antique Country Furnishing by Neumann, page 57, figure 215. Ca late 18th-early 19th century.
[With:] 6 in. ht, grease lamp. See Antique Country Furnishings, figure 206, improved from the open top lamp to a hinged cover, complete with hanging hook. Ca late 18th-early 19th century.
[With:] 3 1/2 x 5 in. cast brass lamp with open bowl, handle has a fleur de lis design. There is a small hole for hanging the lamp (interior of bowl blackened from use). -- 6 1/2 in. brass candlestick. -- 3 in. ht. brass chamber stick.
[Also with:] 9 x 6 x 7 1/2 in. footstove comprised of a wooden frame with pierced tin sides and swinging door. Complete with iron handle. The charcoal pan [which most lack] has been replaced with a tinned cup with handle to hold the charcoal. See Antique Country Furnishings by Neumann, page 236, figure 1444. Ca 18th-early 19th century.
