Lot Description
[SPORTS]. An American silverplate "Cincinnatus B.B. Club" trophy, 1903.
Homan Company silverplate trophy with 3 stag horn handles and gilt interior. Height 8 1/2 inches., approx. 6 in. diameter (not including handles). Inscribed on one side: "Cincinnatus B.B. Club / Champions / Klotter League / 1903 / Presented by / L.G. Klotter"; and engraved on each of the other two sides, one showing crossed baseball bats with a baseball, and the other with a shield encompassing the square, compasses, and arm and hammer symbols.
While the identity of "L.G. Klotter" is not certain, it may be Louis George Klotter (1873-1955), the son of a German immigrant and owner of a prominent Cincinnati brewery. An article in the Cincinnati Enquirer from 3 August 1903 headlined "Klotter's League" indicates that "The Cincinnati team of the Klotter's League defeated the Woodwards in a great game yesterday 5 to 4. it was a pitchers' battle.... "
