Lot Description
PITKIN, George (d.1806). Document signed ("Geo Pitkin Clerk"). New Haven, February 1768.
1 page, 7 3/4 x 6 1/4 in., old folds, clipped lower right corner, modern pencil markings upper left, matted and framed to 20 x 18 in., not examined out of frame.
An order to pay ten pounds "Lawfull [sic] Money out of the Colony Treasury" to Jonathan Silliman of Fairfield, addressed to Connecticut Treasurer Joseph Talcott, Esq. The money is a reward from the Superior Court for informing against Lewis Bennit "for counterfeiting Bills of publick Credit on the Province of New York which Bennit in Pursuance of said Information was thereof convicted before the Supr. Court held in Fairfield on the Last Tuesday save one in Febry Instant."
After serving as the clerk of Connecticut's superior court, George Pitkin would go on to serve as a colonel during the Revolutionary War, commanding the 4th Connecticut Regiment that marched to Boston following the Battle of Lexington and Concord.
