Lot Description
American or French School, 19th Century
Portrait of Young Napoleon
oil on panel
unsigned
8 1/4 x 6 1/4 inches.
Frame 13 3/4 x 11 3/4 inches.
The back of the frame retains a partial printed label reading 81 / BB and another partial label printed M.F.A. with the lender’s name W.H. Whitmore. The reverse of the frame and panel bear other chalk and pencil lettering.
This portrait is reminiscent of early depictions of Napoleon as a young general, such as Napoleon at the Bridge at Arcole, painted by Antoine-Jean Gros (1771-1835) in 1796. It is part of a group of twenty-two portraits depicting members of the 'French Assembly', loaned to the MFA Boston in 1895 by William Whitmore and later sold as part of his estate in 1902, alongside a portrait of Thomas Jefferson.
See Hindman Auctions, American Furniture, Folk and Decorative Arts, September 14th, 2022, Sale 1060, Lot 1058.
