According to genealogical records, Joshua Butler was born in Loudon, Virginia in 1793. By 1806, Butler had moved to Wanye, Kentucky, where he joined the Fifty-third Regiment of the Kentucky Militia. Upon the outbreak of the War of 1812, Butler's unit served in both the Western and Southern Campaigns, the latter of which culminated in the Battle of New Orleans.
