Lot Description
Madame Grès Haute Couture Bubble Top, 1960s

In the 1930s, Madame Grès (1903-93) became known for her exquisitely draped, bias-skimming gowns. The successful label adapted, over decades, to changing styles and eventually producing modern cuts for women in the 1970s and 80s.

Green silk taffeta haute couture top cut with a wide scoop neckline that is outlined with a self fabric band that forms into a bow on the left shoulder. The neck and hem fall lower in the back than the front, which features three hooks at the front hem, which would have secured to another garment that is no longer assocated with this item. When these hooks are secured to the other garment, this top is pulled down the front to the waistband, creating shape to the front. Slits down the sides of the front allow for the arms to come through.
