Lot Description
[CIVIL WAR]. LONGSTREET, James (1821-1904). Signed and inscribed photograph ("James Longstreet, Lieut. General C.S.A."). January 1894.
3 1/2 x 4 3/8 in. photograph on mount signed and inscribed by James Longstreet, "James Longstreet, Lieut. General C.S.A., January 1894," to "Mrs. C.C. Saunders, Gainesville." A rare, post-war photograph of Longstreet in his later years, casually seated in a rocking chair on a front porch, on original mount credited to "Armand, Photographer." Matted, 8 x 10 in. (surface wear and some fading to print, toning and soiling to mount, some fading to "Longstreet").
Lieutenant General James Longstreet, who was considered to be Robert E. Lee’s most trusted subordinate, remained the most visible Confederate personality in the highly charged post-war examination of the causes leading to defeat. Longstreet died in 1904, the last of the Confederate high command with the most resonating voice.
