Lot Description
[CIVIL WAR]. [HOOD, John Bell (1831-1879)]. ANDERSON, Samuel, photographer. CDV of John Bell Hood. New Orleans, LA, ca 1860s.

2 1/8 x 3 5/8 in. CDV on cardstock mount (loss to top right corner and lower left corner/edge of print, light scattered spotting; minor soiling and light edge and corner wear to mount). With Samuel Anderson's imprint to verso.

Confederate General John Bell Hood's reputation for bravery and aggressiveness bordered on recklessness. Nonetheless he was one of the best brigade and division commanders in the Army of Northern Virginia, and was transferred for that reason to attempt to save Joseph E. Johnston's army. However, he was no match for Sherman's overwhelming force.

This image is an immediate post-war view of Hood, who settled in New Orleans soon after the Civil War ended.
