Lot Description
FARRAGUT, D.G. General Order No. 19. signed by Farragut ("D.G. Farragut"), as Admiral in command of the European Squadron. Off Lisbon, 11 May 1868.
5 1/8 x 8 3/16 in., creased, with two pinholes to upper portion, staining throughout, and wear to edges and corners. Verso with numerous pencil inscriptions, possibly period ledgers of monthly soap use.
Circular regarding allowances of soap to be used "for cleaning the ship's galley, paint work, and wind-sails; and will not be exceeded, except upon the written order of the commanding officer of the vessel, stating the necessity of the increase, and the specific object for its use." Rates are broken down into monthly and quarterly uses and amounts.
