[CIVIL WAR]. U.S. Civil War import Model 1860 French-pattern shako.
Leather shako with front plate featuring an American eagle perched above an infantry horn which is flanked by oak and laurel sprays, all surmounted by a red, white, and blue rosette, and topped with black pom-pom. Shako with wear, typical crazing to surface of visor and diagonal crease near visor center, loss to paint on brass plate. Approx. 2 1/4 in. crack in leather at rear base of cap. Green underside impressed "C." Interior sweatband with wear, liquid adhesive visible at juncture of sweatband and green underside. Missing chinstrap.
The U.S. government purchased 10,000 sets of French infantry clothing and equipment in 1861, including leather shakos with brass eagle decoration.
