Partly-printed pay voucher, 1p, 16 3/4 x 11 in. (creasing at folds, toning, small losses and previous adhesive repair, pencil notations). Originally printed as a voucher for the state of Indiana, the United States pays Brigadier General O.M. Mitchel from 1 December through 31 December 1861 during which time he was leading a division of the Army of the Ohio. Signed "O.M. Mitchel" at bottom right, and identifying two "Black" servants named "Valentine" and "Simon" on lower left. Docketed on verso. 

General Ormsby M. Mitchel (1810-1862) was an 1829 graduate of West Point, and a classmate of Robert E. Lee and Joseph E. Johnston. Though best known as a Civil War general, he was also an attorney, astronomer, and publisher. He died of yellow fever shortly after assuming command of X Corps and the Department of the South at Hilton Head, South Carolina, in 1862. The freedmen's community of Mitchelville, South Carolina, was named in his honor.
