Lot Description
[AFRICAN AMERICANA] -- [CIVIL WAR]. Confederate States Mail Line waybill detailing a coach and its passengers, including enslaved persons "Glenn," "Griffin," and "Boutcher." 29 December 1864.
1p, 7 1/2 x 9 1/2 in. partly-printed "Confederate States Mail Line" Way-Bill from Albany, Georgia, to Thomasville, Georgia, listing 6 passengers, including "Sgt. Byran [sp?]" and his enslaved companion "Glenn" along with "C.H. Williams" and his enslaved companions "Griffin" and "Boucher" (creasing at folds, dampstains, and large ink blot near center heading). Docketed on verso.
The Confederate States Mail Line carried both mail and passengers. Though the document does not specifically identify Glenn, Griffin, and Boutcher as enslaved men, the identification by first name only strongly suggests that these were enslaved servants.
