Lot Description
GARIBALDI, Giuseppe (1807-1882). CDV signed by the Italian revolutionary. Genova, Italy: Alessandro Pavia, n.d.
2 1/4 x 3 1/2 in. CDV on cardstock mount (toning, light soiling/spotting; some paper loss and adhesive residue to verso affecting backmark). Photographer's "Fotografia dei Mille" pictorial imprint on verso. Image signed "G. Garibaldi." Garibaldi is featured wearing his characteristic brimless cylindrical cap and striped shirt.
In 1862, Alessandro Pavia began photographing those who joined Garibaldi's 1860 campaign to conquer the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies, known as the Expedition of the Thousand, or "Spedizione dei Mille." This was an important part of the unification of Italy under the Piedmont-Sardinia family in March 1861. The product of Pavia's work was called the "Album dei Mille," a copy of which he donated to Garibaldi himself.
Property from the James Milgram, M.D., Collection of Broadsides, Ephemeral Americana, and Historical Documents
