Lot Description
[EARLY PHOTOGRAPHY]. Album containing 50 hand-colored photographs of Japan.
Oblong quarto album (10 1/2 x 14 in.). 50 hand-colored albumen photographs, majority approx. 8 1/2 x 11 in., or smaller, mounted recto/verso on 10 1/4 x 13 in. album pages (prints toned, with some fading, few with areas of surface loss, few partially separated from mount; mounts toned, with occasional spotting, some chipping and bumping at edges). Enamel covers with fine painted and inlaid designs (lacking spine, front cover fully detached, some chipping and surface loss at edges and corners). Most photographs titled in the negative.
The album features picturesque views of Tokyo, Kyoto, Yokohama, Enoshima, Mount Fuji, and other locations, including landscapes, seascapes, vegetation, and gardens. Views of native homes, parks, and temples are also enclosed, as well as portraits of native subjects including musicians and other characters. Additional images of note include 2 graphic views documenting the execution of criminals.
