Lot Description
[EARLY PHOTOGRAPHY]. Album containing 96 photographs of Egypt, incl. examples by SEBAH, BONFILS, and BEATO. Ca 1895.
Oblong quarto album (10 3/4 x 14 in.) 96 albumen photographs, majority approx. 8 1/2 x 11 in., or smaller, mounted recto/verso on 10 1/4 x 13 in. album pages (some prints toned and faded, occasional spotting; mounts toned, with occasional spotting and soiling, some chipping and bumping at edges). Enamel covers with fine painted and inlaid designs (covers completely detached from spine, some scuffing to covers, chipping at edges and corners). Most photographs are titled in negative, lower margin of print (many in French), or captioned in ink on album page. Some with photographer's credit in the negative.
Highlights include: 3+ photographs credited to SEBAH showing Cairo. -- 20+ photographs credited to BONFILS showing Cairo, the pyramids at Giza, sculpture, and native subjects. -- 15+ photographs credited to BEATO showing Luxor, various stone statues, including the Colossi of Memnon, tombs, temples, and native subjects.
The album also contains formal and informal portraits of native Egyptians, including occupational views of water carriers, running footmen, and farmers. -- Multiple photographs of urban and rural locations throughout Egypt. -- Multiple views of landmarks, ruins, sculpture, and other artwork. -- 2 views of mummified bodies, including Ramesses II.
