Lot Description
[CLAY, Henry (1777-1852)]. Henry Clay "The American Statesman" 1844 campaign cigar case. [With:] Cigar case featuring a young woman.
2 3/4 x 5 1/2 in. painted and lacquered wood case with accordion leather sides, expanding to depth of 1 in. for cigar storage (crazing to surface, front of case with surface scratch near right edge, reverse with small surface punctures and residue, expected wear to interior compartment). Features bust portrait of Henry Clay at center, with inscription above, "Henry Clay / candidad for 1844," and political poem below, entitled "The American Statesman."
[With:] 2 3/4 x 5 1/2 in. painted and lacquered wood case with accordion leather sides, expanding to depth of 1 in. for cigar storage (front with surface abrasions and areas of minor loss, especially along right edge, edge and corner wear, few splits to leather). Features a hand-painted over engraving of a lovely young woman.
