John A. Andrew (1818-1867) won the election to become the 25th governor of Massachusetts, serving from 1861-1866. A fierce abolitionist, Andrew was also a proponent of the enlistment of Black soldiers. He was given permission to raise a Black regiment in January of 1863, leading to the creation of the famed 54th Massachusetts Regiment, USCT.
