Samuel Sprigg Carroll (1832-1893) graduated West Point in 1856 and was a career army officer who rose to the rank of brigadier general during the Civil War. He served as commander of the famed "Gibraltar Brigade" at the Battle of Gettysburg, playing a key role in the defense of Cemetery Hill and repulsing a portion of Pickett's Charge. Carroll suffered wounds at the Battles of Wilderness and Spotsylvania Court House. He retired as a major general, U.S. Army, for disability resulting from wounds received in battle.
