Oblong 4to. Engraved map of California, Nevada, Utah and Arizona hand-colored in wash and outline; profusely illustrated with engraved plates. (Some spotting, a few short tears with occasional repairs.) Original roan-backed green cloth boards gilt (hinges starting, overall wear).
FIRST EDITION of this early history of Los Angeles County including what would become Orange County, "one of the rarest of that fine early series of California county histories, compiled from the newspapers of the county from 1854 to 1880, as well as city and county records, and from interviews with many early pioneers" (J. Gregg Layne, Books of the Los Angeles District). Includes views of Los Angeles, Anaheim, and San Pedro, ad the residences and estates of Mrs. Phineas Banning, Don Manuel Dominguez, J. E. Hollenbeck, H. M. Newhall, John Rowland, and W. H. Workman. Howes W-531 ("b").
