Lot Description
[WAR OF 1812]. WALKER, John C. ALS ("Jno. Co Walker"). Union Village, 29 August 1814.
One page, 8 1/8 x 10 in., on bifolium. Creasing, with separations and light loss to creases and edges, staining, soiling, and wear. Addressed to William D. Cheever, Contractor for the State of New York, on integral leaf.
In full: "As you are the Contractor for the State of N. York, It becomes my duty to inform you, that I have opened a recruiting rendezvous in this village. As there is no agent in this County to issue rations or the men, it will be for the good of the service and for the interest of the government, that one be appointed as soon as your leisure & business will permit. I therefore must request as a favour that you would waive the time allowed you by law (before you are obliged to notice this) and furnish them as promptly as possible."
John C. Walker signs as lieutenant of the 26th Infantry Regiment, which was recruited principally from Vermont.
Property from the James Milgram, M.D., Collection of Broadsides, Ephemeral Americana, and Historical Documents
