Lot Description
[CIVIL WAR]. TIPTON, W.H., photog. Implements of Modern Warfare. Washington, DC, 1875. 
6 1/8 x 3 3/8 stereoview on cardstock mount (few blemishes and spots of ink to print; mount with light soiling and some wear to edges and corners). Washington, DC: W.H. Tipton & Co., 1875. Copyright statement printed on mount recto along with series title, "Artistic Stereo Gems of Gettysburg Scenery." Paper label affixed to verso bears image title, description, and numbered list of the featured pieces of ammunition in the view with identifications. Verso also with Library of Congress ink stamp. 

Titled, "Implements of Modern Warfare," this view features an open cabinet displaying artillery ammunition numbered from 1-50, being "Shot, Shell, &c., from the Battle-field of Gettysburg, comprising the complete collection of Mr. L. M. Buehler, (the only one in the world); also Gen. Meade's chair and John L. Burns' musket, the property of Mr. J. A. Danner..." Examples include a Confederate fuse shell from Culp's Hill, a Confederate spherical case shot from near General Meade's headquarters, and a Confederate percussion parrot shell from Round Top.
