Lot Description
[CIVIL WAR]. Photograph of a GAR veteran posed with a large rabbit. Ex Julian Converse Collection.
3 x 5 1/8 in. (including margins) silver gelatin photograph (crackling to image surface, toning throughout, light wear to edges and corners; verso with paper and adhesive residue). Verso with ink identification reading, "Mr. J.C. Morton, Civil War Veteran, Father of John & Wm S Morton," and (written separately) "and his tame rabbit." The elderly subject wears a II Corps badge and a rectangular eagle belt plate, and holds a sword pointed down toward the ground with one hand. The rabbit sits upon a table next to him.
Accompanied by a partly-printed application for Joseph C. Morton's admission into the for the Union Veterans' Union. 28 January 1904. Morton is listed as having been a corporal in Company G of the 184th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry Regiment, having participated "In all the Engagements of the Army of the Potomac from the battle of the Wilderness to Surrender at Apomatox [sic]."
Provenance: Ex Julian Converse Collection (signed letter from Ballard's Antiques, 10 January 1957, to Julian Converse in part detailing the photograph.
Joseph C. Morton enlisted as a private on 17 May 1864, and was promoted to corporal in February of the following year before being mustered out at Washington DC in July.
