[CIVIL WAR]. WALLACE, Lew (1827-1905). ANS. Constantinople, 21 February 1885.
2 3/16 x 3 3/4 in., light soiling and staining. 

In full: "The Sultan issues no autograph. It would be very bad form to request one. Yours, truly, Lew. Wallace."

Less than a month after the date on this note, Wallace would resign from diplomatic service. He was appointed US minister to the Ottoman Empire in Constantinople, and it was in this capacity that he was serving when he wrote the note featured here.
