[CIVIL WAR]. Carpet bag containing artilleryman's personal effects.
A Civil War carpet bag typical of the period, featuring designs of buildings on the front, with brass lock and latch that are complete (handle exhibits wear from use and the bag itself has darkened). Containing the following personal effects:
Housewife comprised of dark blue uniform cloth with tarred linen backing. With red cloth edging made from uniform and sash material. Nine needles are affixed inside. Bullion letters “VAW” are sewn inside.
[With:] A single red worsted sergeant’s chevron cut from a jacket.
[With:] A single shell jacket rear belt support tab used as a pincushion with ninepins.
[With:] Two small brass general service eagle buttons still sewn to red worsted shell jacket trim.
[Also with:] Brass thimble with partially illegible letters, ”ESTIRE,” plus designs of tree limbs and leaves.
