Lot Description
[WWII - WAKE ISLAND]. Signatures of 18 defenders of Wake Island, incl. General Devereaux.

Binder containing background research, articles, personal recollections, modern photographs and signatures related to the Battle of Wake Island, a small military garrison constructed on an atoll in the Pacific Ocean which came under attack simultaneously with Pearl Harbor. Despite overwhelming odds, Major James P.S. Devereux, USMC, and his forces repelled an initial assault by the Japanese, lifting the morale of the nation following the attack at Pearl Harbor. Wake Island would ultimately fall to the Japanese on 23 December 1941, with Deveraux becoming a POW until September 1945.
