Despite overwhelming odds, Major James P.S. Devereux, USMC, and his forces repelled an initial assault by the Japanese, lifting the morale of the nation following the attack at Pearl Harbor. Wake Island would ultimately fall to the Japanese on 23 December 1941, with Deveraux becoming a POW until September 1945.
