[AFRICAN AMERICANA]. Bill of property listing "one black servant boy about 19 years."
Westmoreland County, PA. 27 June 1822. 7 pages, 7 3/4 x 12 1/2 in., stringbound, splotches of discoloration throughout, with modern ink to first page.
Document is a bill of property of the deceased John Fisher of Rostraver Township in Westmoreland County, PA, "appraised on oath" by Michael Finley and Isaac Shipler. List includes livestock, farm implements, notes of debt owed to the deceased, furniture, small tools, cooking dishes, and all other manner of property and belongings, along with "one black servant boy about 19 years of age to serve till 28 years old." The servant is listed as having an appraised value of $150.
The Gradual Abolition Act of 1780 was passed by the Pennsylvania General Assembly in March of that year. Section Four of the Act stated that every “negro or mulatto child” born of enslaved mothers after the bill’s passage would be considered “servants” to their masters until they turned 28, at which point they would receive their freedom.
